Through the phone booth
In the East Village we stepped into a phone booth inside a hot-dog shop and dialled. A wall swung open.
Behind the bookshelf
The second bar hid behind shelves of old paperbacks. The bartender asked what mood we were in, not what we wanted to drink.
The unmarked door
The last had no name, only a light above a door. By then, we'd stopped needing directions.
